Ascend Job Readiness Training

Ascend Center for Learning has a relatively new job training program that is available to people of all ages. They also provide GEDs but job training is separate from that.

Job Readiness Training is for potential participants who have a GED or who are working toward their GED. The training includes learning a variety of skills and strategies to obtain and retain employment as well as computer literacy. Classes Include Business Communications, Computer Literacy, Job Search Skills, Business Math, Resume Writing, and Interviewing Skills.

What to expect: The free classes are open-enrollment, and can be done full-time or part time. They are open M-F 8:30 to 3. You must attend an orientation held on Thursdays at 10:30. Once you decide you really want their job skills training, you can be enrolled and in class within a week.

What you need: Student must be 17 or older (no age limit), a resident of Travis County, have an ID, and be a US citizen or have proof of eligibility to work. You must make less than 200% of the federal poverty income guideline.

To show Travis County residency, they will take a letter addressed to the student using the Street Youth Ministry address, the Lifeworks address, or they have a form that the student can fill out.

Any government-issued ID would work, including temporary IDs. No documentation is needed for the orientations, and Michele, our case manager, will go over programs, eligibility, and documentation there as well.

Where to go: Orientation is every Thursday morning at 10:30. You go to 1640 B East 2nd Street, Suite 100, Austin, TX 78702. Capital Metro Bus Routes 17 and 320. Call or email: (512) 326-8655info@ascendaustin.org.
