Many volunteers and SYMin clients spent countless hours organizing our third floor. Our Wednesday Girls Group became the first to take advantage of the new space. Clients love it! Now -- on to the next room!

No Pranks Here; Only Blessings Raining Down!

Supplies ready for clients dropping by

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we are not able to operate the Drop-in the same way as before. But, we have adopted. Our 'drop-by team' receives clients outside our gates with a smile, with a meal, usually hot, and with supplies. We are trying to fill the gap created by temporarily disappearing services, so we are doing things like food bags and toilet paper. The 'drop-by team' chats with clients outside (observing social distance) about life and challenges ... hope and hardship in these coronavirus times. They also help drop-by volunteers unload supplies. Meanwhile, our "home team" works the phones, seeking resources.

Wonderful members of One Chapel stay true to their church's belief that "our faith is practical and our lives are meant to be lived in service to others" as they deliver in-kind donations for SYMin distribution outside the Drop-in Center.

What your $100 does at SYM

Your gift of $100 will fund ... 

5.5 focused and strategic visits with street-dependent young persons, usually between 18 and 24 years old, so they began to make progress on their own toward stability, sobriety, and forms of emotional and social well-being. 

We help our clients engage existing programs of entry-level housing, employment and education.

The journey by “Amy” at left required 148 visits with our staff to facilitate and resulted in 24 goals achieved along the way.

SYM Statistical Highlights

SYM's goals for clients are to achieve more stability, sobriety, re-connection with God, and finding a faith home. We break those goals down into dozens of common issues. We watch, listen and probe for when our clients are working on goals. We come alongside them as guides when we can. And we routinely follow-up on how progress is going and celebrate with them as they achieve. It's really an privilege to walk alongside our clients!

It's a Small World

I got a call from Alaska, today. It was a person wanting our shipping address. I gave it and then asked why. He explained that he wants to collect shoes and ship a couple of totes of shoes for our clients before winter comes. (Not sure when that its, but it's probably sooner than winter in Texas.) When I asked how we had come to his attention, he indicated that he had found our photos on Facebook interesting. When I asked why he connected, he indicated that he had spent half his life on the street. Ah!

So far as I know, this person was never a client, although it turns out we each know some clients in common. This person is now married and doing well. I asked what turned him around. He said it was a tough judge. I asked if faith was a resource for him, and he indicated that he's not religious or Christian. However, he finds strength and discipline by practicing martial arts. And his devotion to helping others comes from an oath he has taken as part of his martial arts training.

It's a small world and very awesome to have fans all over the country, including Alaska!

Why do I give? A donor's response

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the work you do in Christ's name. You asked why we support this ministry... it is because we see that God has gifted you to work with street youth and you do so very faithfully. The results have been tremendous and we thank God for that.

I am not gifted to work with the homeless population and our current situation doesn't allow me much time to serve any population. It is truly a gift to me that we can financially support the work you do -- so that in a way I am able to serve this population and to help share that God loves them and Jesus died (and rose) for them! 

I love reading your newsletter and seeing all the good that is happening. I also greatly appreciate that you don't forsake sharing the Gospel in order to care for physical needs. You are wise in discerning when to serve physical needs, how to develop relationships and never neglecting the truth of Christ's message. Thank you for allow us to be a part of that!
